Residential Fence Styles for Long Island Homes
Choices, Choices With Residential Fence Styles!
The type of residential fence you choose to surround your home can have a big impact on the overall look of your house and yard. There are many types of fencing from which to choose. Some give your home and yard optimum privacy and security, while others are used mostly for looks. Consider what you want your fence to achieve before choosing which type works best for you.
- Picket fences are classic choices for homes. Many picket fences are painted white, but you could paint your fence another color or choose to leave it natural wood. Most picket fences are made of wooden boards that stand vertically and are spaced about 1 1/2 inches apart. Horizontal wood beams run across the top and bottom of the fence and connect all of the vertical boards. Picket fences are typically 3 to 5 feet high, so they aren’t the best options for privacy or security. Picket fencing can also be found in vinyl styles.
- Privacy fencing is another option. These fences are usually made of wood, although some people opt for vinyl. Privacy fencing does just what its name implies–it shields your home from intruding eyes, along with blocking out unattractive views. Privacy fences don’t have gaps between the boards, which means no one can peek into your yard. That also means children and pets playing in yards fenced with privacy fences will be less likely to get out. Privacy fences can be up to 8 feet tall.
- Ranch-style fencing is often seen on farms and ranches, but is also popular for the residential landscape. These fences consist of vertical posts spaced about 8 feet apart. The posts are connected by two posts that run horizontally. Ranch fencing is decorative, but would not be used for privacy or security.
- Wrought iron fencing is usually used for its decorative appeal and can have intricate designs and scrolls. Wrought iron fences are made much like picket fences, but their posts are set in concrete. While wrought iron fencing is not the best for privacy or security, it is long-lasting and durable. If you like the look of wrought iron, but want a less expensive option, you can buy aluminum fencing that resembles wrought iron.
- Chain link fencing is another option for residences and is one of the least expensive. Metal posts are anchored in the earth, usually with concrete and chain link sections are secured to the posts. Chain link fencing can be low and reach only 5 feet high, or it can be higher, up to 8 feet. Chain link fences don’t afford any privacy, for the home, but they can be good for security. These fences are especially good for containing pets.
