Types of Fences for Residential Property
Fences can evoke strong emotions in homeowners. A fence can enclose or divide, depending on who is on what side of it. Some buyers move into a home and need to put up a fence immediately to safeguard pets or children. Occasionally, erecting a tall, solid fence without consulting those potentially affected by it can incur the wrath of neighbors. Selecting a type of fence that functions well in its particular location can help keep everyone satisfied.
Wooden Fencing
Cedar and redwood are good choices for fencing. Both are lightweight products and are rot- and insect-resistant. Neither requires staining or painting–they weather to attractive gray or brown finishes. Treated softwoods, such as pine, also have some resistance to rotting but should be painted or stained. The wood can turn black or discolored when exposed to the elements. Wood planks make excellent privacy fences. Most municipal codes set maximum height limits for front, back and side fences, so checking with officials first can save time and expense. Wood pickets work well for airy, informal fences. The designs allow air through and permit views both ways. White picket fences are quintessentially American and appear in classic Hollywood movies that use them to illustrate the concept of "home sweet home." Irregular cedar board, cut to appear wavy, or peeled tree branch segments are useful for creating rustic-looking fences that enhance ranch-style or lodge-style homes.
Metal Fencing
Iron rail fences are effective security barriers. Decorative wrought-iron gates and fencing can add value to a property in addition to beautifying it. Victorian homes benefit from well-designed iron fences that enclose gardens without hiding them from passers-by. Pointed caps on railings might be effective in discouraging people from jumping over a fence but should be avoided in wilderness areas, as deer can impale themselves on the barbs. The often-maligned chain-link fence has a place in residential settings too. Darker chain-link fencing, in colors such as brown or black, can disappear into the landscape. Chain-link is durable and less expensive than many other options, so where privacy might dissuade a cash-strapped homeowner from choosing chain-link, vigorous vines grown up and over the fence can solve both financial and privacy concerns.
Vinyl Fencing
Vinyl fencing originally attempted to mimic wood fencing. Unfortunately, shiny bright-white products looked fake and stood out in established neighborhoods. Improvements in manufacturing processes resulted in a greater variety of colors and textures for vinyl fencing. A homeowner can choose from sections of "plank" privacy fencing in different styles and colors. Vinyl picket styles are also available. Installation of fence panels is fast on flat ground but can be challenging on slopes. Vinyl fencing requires no painting or staining. Read More
